Cell Phone Blamed for Train Death

A man in Berkeley, California was struck and killed yesterday while crossing the train tracks on foot. Witnesses say that he was distracted by talking on his cell phone, resulting in the accident.
Unfortunately, this happens a lot. People easily get distracted by talking on their phone. One time I saw a guy drop his wallet. I called out to him and he was too busy on his phone that he didnt even notice me. To make a long story short I got a number out of his wallet and call his wife. He then met me to get his wallet. A lot of accidents occur when it comes to cell phones. People have to be very cautious. Something so simple can end up so dangerous.

Each intern is also assigned a challenging project that he or she will present to senior management at the end of the summer.
Gap Inc. makes the projects fun for the summer interns.

Teen births in the U.S. see first increase in 16 years

U.S. government staticians said for the first time in 15 years, the teenage birth rate in the U.S. increased. The teen birth rate peaked in 1991, and somehow took an upturn from 2005 to 2006 when the rate increased three percent. They blamed it on increased federal funding for abstinence-only health education that doesn't teach teens how to use condoms and other contraception.
I also think that it also comes from home. Parents should talk to their children and spend time with them.

Fisher’s museum may fill Gap in the Presidio

The former Presidio trustee has offered to build the 100,000-square-foot Contemporary Art Museum at the Presidio to display his and his wife’s modern-art collection at the main Parade Grounds.
They have a very fine collection, and would like the public to see it.
The project would also convert a nearby barracks building into an office, bookstore and education center, according to the plans. The museum could open as soon as March 2011. This is a thoughtful idea. It seems very interesting and entertaining.

Gap To Launch Designer Line Of Women's Shoes

The shoes will be sold in about 75 stores. It will be sold primarily in metro markets, as well as online. Gap, which has been fighting to shake off a persistent decline in sales, clearly thinks shoes might be part of its salvation.
I really do not think that a lot of women would want to buy their shoes online. A lot of people rather try on shoes before buying it. It makes logical sense to do that rather than buying it online to later return it.

Can Oprah help Obama?

Call it the ''O Factor.'' Oprah Winfrey picks a ''favourite book'' or a ''favourite thing'' and poof, it's a best seller. And now Winfrey's ''favourite senator'' Barack Obama hopes the O Factor will work for him, too, as the talk-show host and media icon prepares to campaign for the Democratic presidential candidate in the early nominating states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.
Oparh is a very powerful women and I believe that she can help Obama.

Baby Grace

The toddler whose body washed ashore in Texas last month has been tentatively identified as a 2-year-old girl, and her mother and a man identified as her boyfriend were arrested Saturday, the Galveston County Sheriff's office said Sunday. Police believe two-year-old Riley Ann Sawyers may be "Baby Grace." Investigators believe the child they dubbed "Baby Grace" is actually 2-year-old Riley Ann Sawyers, the Galveston County Sheriff's office said Sunday.
DNA analysis is still in progress to confirm that identification.
The child's mother, Kimberly Dawn Trenor, 19, and a man identified as Royce Clyde Zeigler II, 24, were arrested Saturday on charges of injuring a child and tampering with physical evidence, the sheriff's department said. The couple lives in Spring, Texas, a Houston suburb about 75 miles north of Galveston. Their bonds were set at $350,000 each.
The arrests followed searches conducted Saturday after a November 7 tip, the sheriff's department said.
This is a very terrible situation. Crazy people! I don't understand why people have kids if they know that they can't take care of them.

Gap's belt-tightening keeps shares in vogue

Sales at the retailer's stores have declined for a staggering 10 consecutive quarters, but shares have spiked on stronger cost-management. Gap Inc.'s fashions are hardly topping consumers' shopping lists this holiday season. But that shouldn't stop investors from taking a closer look at the company's stock, which has been soaring, even as shares of other major retailers hit the skids. Murphy has told analysts that he expects the new design leadership at the helm of the Gap and Old Navy chains to start delivering results as early as this spring. Gap's belt tightening looks set to keep the company in fashion.
Gap is one of the few retailers realizing better merchandise margins by managing inventory to current sales growth rate.

Gap Takes Steps to Stem Child Labor

Gap Inc. is pulling 50 percent of its orders placed with a vendor whose subcontracting led to children sewing some of the retailer's clothes in squalid conditions in India. To help address the problem, Gap said it would make a $200,000 grant aimed at improving the working conditions in India and would try to recruit retailers from around the world to participate in a forum next year to address child labor issues.
Last year, Gap stopped working with 23 factories that didn't live up to the company's standards. I'm very happy that Gap Inc. is backing up what they said and that they are taking the the proper actions.

White's Great Hope? (Barack Obama)

Barack Obama and The Dream of a Color-Blind America
Isaiah Oliver, a 24 year old white social worker, grew up in this overwhelming white city and attended the predominantly white university of Richmond in Virginia. Ask him why he supports Barack Obama and he says its because of the candidates race. Because he's black it makes me want to believe that he will change things. Mr. Oliver said that it feels like he's apart of something that's starting to change American politics. It's a cool factor. Hes a rock star.
This is the kind of people that the world needs today. One person can make a big change.

Gap Names Head of Old Navy Unit

Gap, the clothing chain, named a former department store executive, Dawn Robertson, as head of its biggest division, Old Navy. Ms. Robertson, 51, has about 30 years of retail experience and was most recently managing director of Myer, an Australian department store. Sales at Gap stores open at least a year have declined in 25 of the last 28 months. Old Navy generated $6.8 billion in sales last year, or about two-fifths of Gap’s revenue. Ms. Robertson have a lot of experience and Gap Inc. is hoping that she can help manage the department stores.

Cisco Profits From Sales in Serbia Amid U.S. Slump

Cisco, the biggest maker of computer-networking equipment, may say revenue from emerging markets topped $1 billion for the first time last quarter, said Inder Singh, a Lehman Brothers telecommunications analyst in New York.

More than 2 million students across the world have taken computer-networking courses through programs set up by Cisco. "It's good for business, and it's good for society,'' Chambers said.

Getting Closer To The Customer

Gap is doing things much differently today than a year ago. The jury is still out, though, on whether the new strategy will spur sales. ADS: Instead of uniform marketing (“everyone in leather”), Gap now tailors ads to the different buying habits of men and women. DESIGN:What used to be done on gut instinct is now based more on research, including focus groups and staff surveys.PRODUCTS: Having struck out with a wide range of color and style choices, Gap is zeroing in on fewer but more segmented offerings. LEADERSHIP: Micromanagement by former CEO Drexler has been replaced by new boss Pressler's hands-off leadership. By planning and going by their research Gap Inc. is hoping to have more sales.

India Activists Decry Gap Child Labor

The Indian children reportedly found making clothes for Gap Inc. should be reunited with their families and compensated by the government, activists said Monday amid a spreading scandal about the use of child labor by the international clothing chain. Child labor remains a widespread problem in India, despite the country's economic boom and its growing wealth. Chandler said Gap requires its suppliers to guarantee that they will not use child labor to produce garments. Gap stopped working with 23 factories last year over violations uncovered by its inspectors. Hopefully, by not working with the factories that use child labor, it will influence India to stop it.

India responds to child labor allegations

India officially reacted on Tuesday to accusations of child labor that resulted in a recall of Gap clothing made in the country, with Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath implying that reports on such issues displayed ulterior motives. Activists say conditions in the workplaces are miserable--children work in poorly lit, cramped areas, often deprived of nutritious food and paid wages lower than the minimum standards.
This has to be stop. There just children being force to work in such poor conditions. I hope that by broadcasting this situation India would be under pressure to improve this situation.

Gap admits many overseas workers are mistreated

On Wednesday Gap Inc. acknowledged that many of the workers making the retailer clothes are mistreated and vowed to improve often shoddy factory conditions by cracking down on unrepentant manufactures. The mistreatment includes low pay, psychological abuse among problems disclosed in the company report.
This is very sad and wrong. Gap Inc. makes billions of dollars. It is their social responsibity that everything runs smoothly for their employees. If their is no workers to make the clothing then Gap can't sell their products.

Gap: Report of Kids sweatshop, deeply disturbing!

The president of Gap North America says a subcontractor accused of using child labor to sew Gap clothes in India has been fired and the Gap will not sell clothes made in the New Delhi sweatshop."We strictly prohibit the use of child labor," Hansen said in a statement. "Gap has a history of addressing challenges like this head-on, and our approach to this situation will be no exception.
I am happy that they fired this jerk. I find this very disturbing. I'm very happy that Gap Inc. did not encourage this. It was a very unwise decision that the subcontractor made. Child Labor is wrong everywhere!

Founders of the Gap Now Plan A Museum

Now the Fishers are looking to brand themselves, with plans for a new museum devoted to their personal trove of Modern art, an impressive collection that includes pieces from the likes of Chuck Close, Richard Serra and Alexander Calder. The museum will contain all of what Gap has accomplish over the years, includes building a 100,000-square-foot museum at the heart of the Presidio.
This is a good idea to get the public to come in and see where and how Gap Inc. started. Also it would draw other cultural institutions as well. I hope that the museum would be a sucess and that Fisher's collection is seen and known.

Who do he think he is?

James D. Watson, who shared the 1962 Nobel prize for deciphering the double-helix of DNA, apologized “unreservedly” yesterday for comments reported this week suggesting that black people, over all, are not as intelligent as whites.
This is a ignorant statement. If this was a black person that said this about a white person. It would have been broadcast all over the world. It goes to show you how the world still works. He was better off not saying anything at all.

California Blazes

As winds abated today, air tankers began an all-out assault on the fires in southern California, but thousands of houses remained threatened as firefighters continued their struggle to contain the blazes that have scarred the region since Sunday.
It is very terrible that this had to happen. Many people lost their homes and all that they had. This wildfire created a disaster it burned through nearly 500,000 acres and displaced half a million residents over 5 days.

Gap Inc. Culture

At Gap Inc., people are encouraged to make a difference. A difference in their jobs, to the business, and in their communities. They have a diverse group of employees who have a lot of responsibility at early stages in their careers. So what kind people are right for the Gap? People who take balanced risks, who take ownership in what they do, and people with creative minds and big ideas to ensure that the brands continue to have a point of view. The retail business demands creativity and innovation, and their work environment allows for it. Gap Inc., is a company that strives for integrity in everything they do.
It is considerate that Gap Inc. allows their employees the right to tell their ideas. It also helps the company to build a relationship with their staff.

Gap Current Overseas Push

The San Francisco clothing chain is expected to announce a franchise agreement with Dubai-based retailer Al Tayer Group to open Gap (GPS ) and Banana Republic stores in five markets in the Middle East.
By pushing into non-Western countries, Gap is hoping to sell masses of young, sophisticated Asian and Middle East shoppers on its trademark jeans, casual pants, and t-shirts. Gap's current overseas push comes as the company is trying to reverse a trend of declining sales. They believe that they can attract consumers in these areas.
I think that this will benefit Gap Inc. because it introduces other parts of the world to Gap Inc. It will also help reduce financial risk for the company.
Gap Inc. message is to promoting "fresh casual American style" and Banana Republic's image of "affordable luxury." If people can afford the clothing and they like the style chances are their going to buy it.

Global Business

As an international specialty retailer, Gap Inc. leveraged its brand to educate and inform people on the world's AIDS crisis. Through its partnership with (PRODUCT) RED, Gap provides stylish, affordable clothing and channels the sales of these products into positive change.
I think that this is very important that Gap Inc. has made the commitment to help fund this global campaign. Gap's partnership with (PRODUCT) RED benefits everyone. Gap benefits by creating great clothes that customers love, the Global Fund benefits because they receive a sustainable flow of funds through Gap (PRODUCT) RED contributions, and Africans battling HIV/AIDS benefit as recipients of Global Fund programs and services. This can make a big change and save many lifes.

Since launching last year, (PRODUCT) RED has contributed more than $45 million to the Global Fund to finance programs that help women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa.
I think that this is a huge success. It is nice that Gap Inc. has contribute to helping people in need. This can help educate awareness in others to protect themselves against the disease.

Lawsuit Filed Against Gap Inc.

A south Florida women started a class action lawsuit against Gap Inc., after the company admitted computers containing the personal information of hundreds and thousands of job applicants were stolen. Gap Inc. has offered to pay a year worth of money to monitor the security on her credit information. Both her and her attorney feel this is not enough.
I believe that this women is right to file a lawsuit against Gap Inc., for the simple fact that she can be at risk for a lot of things. What Gap Inc. offer is not enough because it only last for a year. What happens after that? She will be on her own. When a person fills out a application you should trust and believe that your information is confidential and protected. At this day and age identities are being stolen without even caughting the person.

E-Commerce Report

Gap Inc. recently shut down its website while it worked on the "Too many clicks problem". The company turned away thousands of customers and millions of dollars in business. This gave Gaps competitors a big leap to try to catch up.
I think that Gap Inc. lost out on a lot of customers because a lot of customers shop online. In this case it can cause customers to go elsewhere. This will give Gap's competitors the upper hand.

Gap Inc. & Piperlime e-commerce

Piperlime’s customers will receive free shipping and free returns on every order, along with 24-hour customer service via phone or email. Which helps save time.
